When people talk about business today, the conversation usually centers around profits, technology, efficiency, growth, and competition. Those things certainly matter. Businesses need to be sustainable, innovative, and financially healthy. However, after spending more than four decades building companies, serving customers, raising a family, traveling the world, and experiencing both success and adversity, I have come to believe that one goal is often overlooked.
That goal is bringing happiness to others.
Some people may think happiness is a soft concept that has little to do with business. I disagree. In fact, I believe creating genuine happiness is one of the most valuable contributions any person or organization can make. In a world that often feels rushed, divided, and distracted, joy has become more important than ever.
The Family Business That Taught Me a Bigger Lesson
I grew up in a family that helped create an entire industry focused on fun. My parents founded what became the inflatable amusement ride industry. My father invented the inflatable ride, and my mother found a way to bring it directly to families and communities.
As a young man, I helped expand that vision. Over the years, we opened hundreds of rental locations and brought affordable family entertainment to people across the country.
At first glance, some people see inflatable attractions as simple entertainment. What I saw was something much deeper. Every time a child laughed, every time a family gathered together, and every time a community event brought people closer, I witnessed something powerful.
I witnessed happiness.
The product was never just an inflatable ride. The real product was the smile it created. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my entire career.
Technology Cannot Replace Human Joy
We live in an incredible era. Technology has transformed how we communicate, work, travel, and solve problems. Innovation has improved countless aspects of our lives.
At the same time, many people feel more isolated than ever.
We can connect instantly with someone on the other side of the world, yet many people struggle to connect with their neighbors. We can access unlimited information, yet many people still feel empty and disconnected.
Technology is a wonderful tool, but it is not a substitute for human connection.
A child’s laughter. A family’s shared experience. A kind word from a stranger. A moment that creates lasting memories.
These are the things that make life meaningful.
Businesses that understand this truth have an opportunity to do more than generate revenue. They can create experiences that bring people together and remind them what matters most.
Happiness Creates Value That Lasts
One of the biggest misconceptions in business is that profit and purpose exist on opposite sides of the equation.
My experience has been exactly the opposite.
When you genuinely improve people’s lives, success often follows.
Customers remember how you make them feel. Employees remember whether they were respected. Communities remember whether you contributed something positive.
People may forget a marketing campaign or a sales pitch, but they rarely forget experiences that brought them joy.
That is why businesses should ask themselves an important question.
Are we simply selling products, or are we creating positive experiences?
The answer can completely change how an organization operates and how it impacts the world around it.
Kindness Is Good Business
One message I have tried to live by throughout my life is simple.
That advice has helped me navigate challenges, setbacks, and difficult situations. It has also shaped how I view leadership and business.
Kindness is often mistaken for weakness. In reality, it takes strength.
Kindness builds trust. Kindness creates loyalty. Kindness opens doors that force and criticism never will.
The world has enough negativity. It has enough anger and division.
What it needs more of is compassion.
Imagine how different our communities would be if more people focused on lifting others up instead of tearing them down. Imagine how much stronger businesses could become if leaders made kindness part of their culture rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Small acts of kindness often create ripple effects that extend far beyond what we can see.
Happiness Is a Form of Service
As I have grown older, I have become increasingly convinced that success is not about what we accumulate. It is about what we contribute.
The happiest people I have met around the world are not always the wealthiest. They are often the people who spend their lives serving others, helping their communities, and making a positive difference wherever they go.
Bringing happiness to others is a form of service.
When you create opportunities for families to spend time together, you are serving. When you encourage someone who is struggling, you are serving. When you use your talents to improve another person’s day, you are serving.
Those actions matter.
Many of them will never make headlines, but they can change lives.
A Challenge for All of Us
Every day presents a choice.
We can focus only on ourselves, our problems, and our goals, or we can look for ways to bring a little more happiness into the lives of the people around us.
The world does not need more people chasing recognition. It needs more people creating positive impact.
Whether you are running a business, leading a family, serving a community, or simply interacting with the people you meet each day, never underestimate the value of bringing joy to others.
At the end of our lives, people will not remember every business deal we closed or every accomplishment we achieved. They will remember how we treated them. They will remember how we made them feel.
For me, that is the real business of happiness.
And it may be the most important work any of us will ever do.
